Die for a Noble Cause

Lucy focuses on celebration too, though for her and the kids at Gan Sabra, those celebrations are found in daily milestones. “We have chickens and dogs so our kids will learn to love well,” she shared as Marshall, one of those dogs, peeked in on us and then settled in for a nap. “Everyone does chores here—we all do our share. We are called to work until we stop breathing. Our only rest is in Jesus.”

She stepped away for a moment to encourage the children as they worshiped in the prayer room upstairs and then rested again next to the open window.

“You know what my greatest wish is? My wish is that even if I die, I want to die for a cause. I don’t want to just die peacefully. We think that’s a blessing, right? To go peacefully in our sleep. I don’t blame those who believe that. But as for me, I don’t want to die that way—that’s a soft way. My life is so short, and I will die once. So I want to die for a purpose, for a noble cause. Sometimes the kids die in our home, and it’s hard to deal with. But God is giving us strength. Only when you trust Him do you see miracles. Expenditure will always be greater than income. But His miracles are always greater than both. Miracles happen. We always have enough.

“You know, I used to think, These kids are lucky to have us. Through Christ, we are providing their lives with meaning. But now I know it’s just the opposite. Because of them, I have been given meaning. When I give my life away to others, my life is meaningful. I thought the only way to have meaning was to do one thing. Now I know different. God’s ways are higher. He is not lacking in plans for us.”

Lucy’s heart is carrying on in the hearts of the children. Not one sees their life as lacking. Every child at Gan Sabra wants to pour out their life for others when they grow up. Knowing abuse and neglect, they now want to be doctors and teachers and social workers who care for those who can’t care for themselves.

There’s Allen, raised by a leper woman in the jungle after his family abandoned him, who wants to be a doctor so he can care for the truly poor. And Tanya, once locked in a hut for years and fed through a slot in the door, who believes she is called to teach and shatter the myths about HIV in her state and in her country. And Nelly, a precious teenager who was raped by the very family members who infected her with HIV, who believes her calling is to help others learn to forgive.

Lucy smiles because she knows that God’s story within everything is greater and that He can be trusted with each switchback and hairpin turn, every deep and shadowed valley, and every mountain-peak moment that takes our breath away.
